BJP, Shiv Sena Finalise Seat-Sharing Pact For Mumbai Civic Body Polls

The Mumbai civic body or the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest corporation, will go to polls on January 15.

Under the agreed formula, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will contest 137 seats, while Shiv Sena will field candidates in 90 seats. (PTI)

The constituents of the ruling Mahayuti allinace, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), have finalised the seat-sharing arrangement for the upcoming Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections.

As per the seat sharing agreement for 227-seat civic body, the BJP will contest 137 seats, while Shiv Sena will field candidates in 90 seats. Both parties will also allocate a portion of their respective seat quotas to their allied parties as part of the broader Mahayuti arrangement.

With the seat distribution now settled, candidates from both the BJP and Shiv Sena are set to file their nomination papers on Tuesday, marking the formal start of their electoral campaign for the civic body polls.

The Mahayuti alliance will face a challenge from the opposition combine of Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena (UBT) and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena headed by Raj Thackeray.

The BMC has a total strength of 227 seats. Mumbai has an electorate of over 1.03 crore voters, including over 55 lakh men, over 48 lakh women and 1,099 voters registered as ‘others’, as per PTI.

In the BMC elections 2017, the then-undivided Shiv Sena emerged as the single largest party with 84 seats, followed closely by the BJP with 82. Since then, 46 Sena corporators have joined the Shinde-led faction, along with 16 corporators from other parties. The BJP has also gained six corporators from rival parties, as per PTI.

BMC Polls 2026

The Mumbai civic body or the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the country’s richest corporation, will go to polls on January 15, with counting of votes on January 16.

The State Election Commission last week announced the poll schedule for BMC, along with 28 other civic corporations. As many as 2,869 seats in these municipal corporations will be up for grabs, said State Election Commissioner Dinesh Waghmare, adding that 3.48 crore voters are eligible to exercise their franchise in these major urban centres of the state.

The elections for all 29 corporations, including Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, Thane, Kalyan-Dombivli, Pune, Nashik, Nagpur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, will be held in a single phase.
