In a shocking incident, a Hindu worker was killed after being run over by a car for demanding payment for fuel at a petrol pump in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district.
According to reports, the incident took place on Friday when the worker, identified as 30-year-old Ripon Saha, demanded payment for fuel at the Karim Filling Station in Rajbari. The SUV driver, suspected of being owned by a former senior BNP member, reportedly attempted to leave without paying and ran over the worker, killing him on the spot.
Who Was Ripon Saha?
Ripon was a 30-year-old staff member of Karim Filling Station in Goalanda Mor of the Rajbari region of Bangladesh. He was performing his assigned tasks on Friday when tragedy struck him down.
As per reports, a black Land Cruiser arrived at the filling station and took fuel worth 5,000 taka. When the vehicle driver attempted to leave without paying, Ripon tried to stop it. He allegedly stood in front of the car after the latter refused to pay for fuel, and it over ran him before fleeing.
Police said CCTV footage from the site showed Ripon and Hashem standing beside the vehicle. After a brief pause, Hashem got into the vehicle and it suddenly tried to leave the petrol pump, prompting Ripon to chase it. Another worker, Jakir Hossain, also ran after them and found Ripon’s body on the highway with severe injuries to the head and face.
Police later seized the vehicle and arrested its owner, Abul Hashem, alias Sujan, 55, and his driver, Kamal Hossain, 43. Hashem, a former treasurer of the Rajbari district Bangladesh ist Party (BNP) and former president of the district Jubo Dal, is a contractor by profession, police said.
Atrocities Against Hindus In Bangladesh
This is the latest incident in the series of attacks on Hindu minorities in the neighbouring country. Several Hindu individuals have been assaulted and attacked in Bangladesh after violent protests erupted in the neighbouring country following the death of July uprising organiser Sharif Osman Hadi in Singapore.
Recently, the house of a Hindu family was targeted and set ablaze in Sylhet, causing fear among the family and the community.
Last week, a Hindu auto driver was beaten to death by a group of attackers in Daganbhuiyan in Bangladesh’s Chittagong. Prolay Chaki, a musician and the cultural affairs secretary of the Awami League’s Pabna district unit, died in prison on Sunday night after reportedly suffering a heart attack.
Earlier, a Hindu man, identified as Joy Mahapatro, was allegedly beaten and later poisoned by a local Muslim, named Amirul Islam.
A 25-year-old Hindu man died on Tuesday after he jumped into a canal while trying to escape a mob that accused him of theft. Mithun Sarkar, a resident of Bhandarpur village, was chased by locals who suspected him of stealing, news agency ANI reported.
On Monday, Rana Pratap Bairagi, a Hindu businessman and acting editor of a newspaper was shot dead in Jessore district. A 40-year-old Hindu grocery shop owner Sarat Mani Chakraborty died on same day.
In another horrific incident, a Hindu woman was allegedly gang-raped by two men, who also tied her to a tree and cut off her hair in a glaring display of lawlessness and atrocities against minorities in the country.
Earlier, another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched and burnt to death in Mymensingh over alleged blasphemy. After thrashing and killing Das, the mob hung his body from a tree and set it on fire. Another Hindu man, Amrit Mondal, was lynched to death by a mob over extortion allegations. Bajendra Biswas, a Hindu garment factory worker, was shot dead in Bangladesh’s Mymensingh in the same month.
