Andhra Pradesh chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu has weighed in on the ongoing row over the proposed delimitation and its impact, especially in the states down south. While speaking to the media in Delhi, Naidu said there is no point in jumping the gun. “Has anybody seen the bill or has anybody seen the process or knows about its impact? Why is everybody getting so excited merely on assumptions?" Naidu said.
He further went on to say that demography should be the concern for every nation, and India is no different. “Delimitation and population management are entirely different, and for everybody who spoke about states like Bihar and UP, I must say that they’ve done a very good job," the Andhra Pradesh CM argued.
While speaking about his forward-looking approach to increasing the fertility rate, the chief minister said, “Delimitation takes place after every 25 years, and this time it will be special because we have to give reservations for women in elections. There was a point when I was greatly in favour of family planning, but now I have changed my views. Whatever states like UP and Bihar have done is a great advantage, and demographic dividend will make a lot of difference to a country like India. Many countries across the globe are facing ageing problems. Even progressive countries like Japan, Europe, etc, are facing the same. Ageing is also a problem for certain states. We must look at a sustainable demographic dividend plan," Naidu said.
To combat the issue of the ageing population, certain steps must be taken by the finance commission and the government of India, he underscored. “Do not punish those people who have an ageing problem. Both the Government of India and the finance commission must give incentives to people to have more children," Naidu said.
For the last many days, a raging debate has been underway between the Government of India, led by union home minister Amit Shah, and Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin. Stalin argues that delimitation will be draconian and will punish states like Tamil Nadu for having effective family control measures in place. While the union government has rubbished all such speculations, the DMK leadership continues to argue that they will be at a disadvantage.
