Iran’s UN Ambassador, Amir-Saeid Iravani, has called for the Security Council and UN Secretary-General to condemn President Donald Trump’s statement. He had warned the clerical regime of Iran against using violence on protesters, saying the US would come to their rescue.

Iran is facing intense protests over economic hardship that entered their sixth day in parts of the country. Demonstrations have been driven largely by worsening economic conditions, soaring prices, and the sharp fall of the national currency. At least seven people have been killed so far in incidents linked to the unrest, according to officials and media reports.

Amid growing volatility, Donald Trump cautioned Tehran against cracking down on demonstrators, saying that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters," the United States would “come to their rescue," adding that Washington was “locked and loaded."

In response, Iran’s UN Ambassador wrote a letter to the UN Secretary-General and members of the UN Security Council on Friday, protesting President Trump’s post on the demonstrations in Iran and stressing that it will “exercise self-defence decisively and proportionately" if the US attacks.

Criticising Trump’s remarks, the ambassador said the statement was “in violation of international law and the Charter of the United Nations".

He also cited a previous statement made by the US President in which he “publicly threatened the Islamic Republic of Iran with the use of force, including renewed military attacks against Iran’s peaceful nuclear facilities and its defensive capabilities".

It said: “Iran will exercise its rights decisively and proportionately. The United States of America bears full responsibility for any consequences arising from these unlawful threats and any ensuing escalation."

Iran has also denounced Trump’s remarks and called its security a “red line". Ali Shamkhani, an adviser to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, said, “Any intervening hand nearing Iran’s security on pretexts will be cut off with a regret-inducing response."

Anadolu Agency quoted Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei, who said Iranians would not allow foreign interference and would resolve their problems “through dialogue and engagement."

“It is enough to review the long record of actions by American politicians undertaken in the name of ‘saving the Iranian people’ to grasp the depth of America’s so-called ‘empathy’ with the Iranian nation," he said.

The current unrest is the most significant in Iran since 2022, when nationwide protests erupted following the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody, posing one of the toughest challenges to the country’s leadership in recent years.
