Bhojpuri actor-singer Khesari Lal Yadav, who made his electoral debut from the Chhapra Assembly constituency on an RJD ticket, suffered a surprise defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections, losing to BJP candidate Chhoti Kumari by a margin of 7,600 votes. The counting spanned 30 rounds, at the end of which Chhoti Kumari secured 86,845 votes, while Khesari finished with 79,245.

The loss has prompted Khesari to break his silence with a reflective social-media post. Hours after the results, he shared on Instagram a portrait of himself alongside a poem by noted Hindi poet Shiv Mangal Singh ‘Suman’, underscoring his belief that “the people are above everything".

In his caption, he wrote that he remained unafraid of either victory or defeat, adding, “Sangharsh path par jo mila, ye bhi sahi woh bhi sahi (Whatever comes on the path of struggle is acceptable)." The post, which quickly went viral, further affirmed his commitment to continue raising public issues.

Janta mere liye tab bhi sarvopari thi, aaj bhi hai aur hamesha rahegi! Mudda tab bhi uthal ba, aage bhi uthi… jai Bihar (The people have always been most important to me, and they always will be. I will keep raising issues. Jai Bihar)," he added.

Khesari’s campaign, marked by high-profile roadshows and an energetic outreach programme, was overshadowed in its final phase by a controversy surrounding his remarks on the Ram Temple. The comment triggered sharp reactions from several seers, with some accusing him of attempting to polarise sentiments for electoral gains.

Hanumangarhi’s Deveshacharya Maharaj was among the most vocal critics, describing Khesari’s statement as “foolish" and alleging that it was made merely to appease a section of voters. He asserted that India, rooted in Sanatan Dharma, revered Lord Rama as “its soul", and said Khesari’s views reflected ignorance. He went on to say that even Khesari’s own family would affirm the importance of the Ram Temple and called him “irreligious", claiming his film songs also lacked spiritual grounding.

Despite the setback and the controversy, Khesari’s supporters say his message of resilience indicates he is unlikely to withdraw from public life anytime soon. His foray into politics, though unsuccessful this time, has ensured that he remains at the centre of conversation in both Bhojpuri entertainment circles and Bihar’s political space.
