US President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox News, said on Sunday that he has found a buyer for the video app TikTok. He also referred to the buyer as a group of “very wealthy people" whose identities he will reveal in about two weeks.

Revealing more, Trump stated that the deal will need China’s nod and that he might soon get Beijing’s approval as well, who, as per the American president, would likely approve it.

“We have a buyer for TikTok, by the way," Trump said. “I think I’ll probably need China’s approval. I think President Xi will probably do it."

On being asked about the identity of the buyer, he said, “I will tell you in about two weeks."

Earlier this month, the US president extended the deadline for China-based ByteDance to sell TikTok’s US assets to September 17, despite a law requiring either a sale or shutdown if substantial progress wasn’t made.

A potential agreement had been developing earlier this spring to separate TikTok’s US operations into a newly formed, US-based company, primarily owned and managed by American investors.

However, the plan was paused after China signaled disapproval, following President Trump’s announcement of sharp tariff hikes on Chinese imports.

According to a law passed in the United States in 2024, TikTok must either be sold by its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or shut down in the US by January 19, 2025, unless ByteDance could show that it had made major progress toward selling its US operations.

However, Trump, who has believed that the video app has helped him gain popularity among young voters during the 2024 election, has extended the deadline three times, giving ByteDance more time to sell the app instead of immediately shutting it down.
