A 50-year-old woman has been stabbed to death on a busy street in London, and a man has been arrested on suspicion of murder, police told Sky News.

Officers from the Metropolitan Police were called to reports of a stabbing in Willesden on Saturday afternoon, shortly before 4 pm on Pound Lane.

Emergency services attended and found the woman with serious stab wounds. Despite the efforts of paramedics at the scene, she was declared dead.

A 30-year-old man, believed to have been known to the victim, was arrested later the same evening on suspicion of murder and is in custody at a north London police station, the force said.

Detective Chief Inspector Rebecca Woodsford, leading the investigation, expressed condolences to the victim’s family and thanked members of the public who provided first aid and called the emergency services.

Police said inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of the incident, but early indications suggest it was an isolated incident with no wider risk to the public. Local officers will maintain an increased presence in the area in the coming days to reassure residents and support the investigation.

Detective Superintendent Tony Bellis described the attack as “tragic and deeply concerning," adding that anyone who witnessed the incident or has information that could assist police should contact officers.
