A meteorite from Mars named NWA-16788, believed to be the largest ever discovered on Earth, is scheduled for auction at Sotheby’s later this month. This extraordinary rock weighs 24.67 kilograms (54.39 pounds), surpassing the previous record-holder, Taoudenni 002, which weighed 14.51 kg and was found in Mali in 2021.
The rare meteorite was unearthed in November 2023 by a meteorite hunter in Niger’s Agadez region, an area known more for dinosaur fossils than space rocks. Thereafter, a sample was sent to the Shanghai Astronomy Museum that confirmed its Martian origin.
Experts now estimate that this massive meteorite could fetch up to US$4 million, drawing interest from collectors and scientific institutions. The upcoming auction presents a rare chance to own a piece of Mars without actually leaving Earth.
