Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Kyrgyzstan on Sunday to take part in the 26th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit, which will also be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other leaders of member countries.
The summit in Bishkek, to be held from August 31 to September 1, comes ahead of what is expected to be a busy September for Xi. On the sidelines of the meeting, he is also expected to hold bilateral talks with several SCO leaders. The visit also comes days after Security Advisor Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing on the India-China border issue.
State-run Xinhua news agency quoted Xi as saying on arrival, "I look forward to attending the SCO Bishkek Summit, working with all parties to revisit the 25-year development experience of the SCO, jointly discuss cooperation plans, create the future of the organisation." He also said he looked forward to working with all sides to "promote the continuous new development of the organisation".
The SCO member states are Russia, India, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Belarus and China.
September is expected to be a busy month for Xi, who is widely expected to attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13 and later travel to the US for a summit meeting with President Donald Trump.
Ahead of the BRICS summit, Doval and Wang held the 25th meeting of the Special Representatives mechanism on the border issue in Beijing on Tuesday. Both countries reached an eight-point consensus and agreed to advance discussions on an "Early and Substantial Harvest" of boundary delimitation and border management. The Special Representatives mechanism is seen as a key channel to address the 3,488-km India-China border dispute, along with recurring tensions over several bilateral issues.
Xi's visit to Kyrgyzstan for the SCO summit brings together regional diplomacy, expected bilateral meetings and the broader run-up to next month's BRICS gathering and other high-level engagements.
