Tension flared in the Bihar Legislative Council on Monday as Chief Minister Nitish Kumar targeted former Chief Minister Rabri Devi in a heated exchange.
Addressing Rabri, Nitish said in a fit of anger, “yeh jo ladki hai… kabhi kuch kaam ki hai? Iska pati hata, toh isko bana diya CM" (This girl… has she ever done any work? When her husband was removed, they made her the Chief Minister).
The confrontation erupted as Rabri Devi, leader of the opposition and Bihar’s first woman Chief Minister, raised concerns over the rising number of rape cases in the state.
“Not a single district in Bihar has been left untouched where you won’t find rape cases being reported," she told the House, prompting opposition MLCs to shout slogans against the government.
Amid the chaos, Nitish Kumar defended his government, alleging that the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) did little for women when in power. “When they were in power, they did not do any work. They did nothing for women. After we came to power in 2005, all-round development of Bihar has taken place, and the state is progressing on all fronts," he claimed, urging Deputy Chairman Rambachan Rai to take action against the disruptive opposition members.
The verbal skirmish escalated quickly, with both leaders addressing each other in animated tones, but much of the exchange was inaudible as microphones were switched off during the commotion. The House was eventually adjourned by Deputy Chairman Rai.
Speaking to reporters outside, Rabri Devi accused the state government of failing in law and order, citing daily incidents of rape and murder. “The law and order has failed in the state and incidents of murder and rape are occurring every day. This government is incompetent," she said.
The senior RJD leader also demanded the resignation of both Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, who holds the Home portfolio.
“The home minister had himself said that if any such incident occurs, he would resign within 24 hours," she added.
