Yemen’s Houthis on Tuesday fired a missile at Israel, triggering air raid sirens in several areas of southern Israel. The rebels confirmed they used a “hypersonic ballistic missile type Palestine 2" to target the Negev airbase.
The Israeli military later confirmed that the missile was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force (IAF) before it could reach Israeli territory.
“A missile launched from Yemen was intercepted by the IAF (air force) prior to crossing into Israeli territory," the Israeli military said in a statement.
This marks the first reported attack on Israel from the Houthis since the ceasefire in the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza took effect on January 19.
Yemen’s Iran-backed Houthi rebels, who have targeted Israel before, condemned the renewed Israeli strikes on Gaza, pledging to escalate their support for Palestinians after threatening earlier this month to attack Israeli ships in the Red Sea.
The latest wave of Israeli strikes has been the deadliest since the truce began, resulting in over 400 deaths across Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
The Houthis, aligned with Iran’s “axis of resistance" against the US and Israel, carried out numerous drone and missile strikes on passing ships and Israeli territory during the Gaza conflict, expressing their support for the Palestinians.
