Sixteen people were killed and two dozen others were injured after a passenger bus in Cambodia crashed off a bridge into a river, police said.

According to deputy police chief Siv Sovanna, the bus was traveling from Siem Reap, where the famous Angkor Wat temple is located, to the capital Phnom Penh when it crashed early Thursday morning in Kampong Thom province.

He said on Friday that the death toll rose from 13 to 16 after rescuers finished searching Thursday night.

A preliminary investigation indicated that the driver was likely drowsy after departing Siem Reap at night for what is typically a five-and-a-half-hour journey. Authorities did not confirm whether the driver was among the fatalities.

There were about 40 passengers on the bus, all of whom were Cambodian, police said.

The Ministry of Public Works and Transport said that the traffic accidents in Cambodia killed 1,509 people in 2024, and 1,062 people died in the first nine months of 2025.
