A Pakistan Army helicopter crashed on Monday morning in the Diamer district of Gilgit-Baltistan, killing two pilots and three technicians on board, the Associated Press reported, citing a government spokesman.
According to a military statement, the MI-17 helicopter was on a routine training flight when it developed a technical fault and went down around 10:00 am (0500 GMT).
The crash occurred in a mountainous tourist area of Gilgit-Baltistan where a test landing for a proposed helipad was reportedly being conducted, AFP reported, citing a police official. The helicopter apparently developed a technical fault and caught fire, according to regional government spokesman Faizullah Faraq.
Last month, a military helicopter delivering flood relief supplies in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province crashed in bad weather, killing five. In September 2024, another crash in the northwest claimed six lives, and in 2022, a similar incident in Balochistan killed five servicemen, including a senior commander.
