North Korean leader Kim Jong Un told Russian President Vladimir Putin during talks in China that Pyongyang will support Moscow in its defence of sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to a report.

In a meeting that took place on September 3 on the sidelines of a large military parade held to mark the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, a key event in China’s Victory Day celebrations in Beijing, the North Korean leader described his support for Russia as a “brotherly debt", news agency KCNA reported.

“Comrade Kim Jong Un said that Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will continue supporting to the full extent the struggle of the government, the army, and the people of Russia for protection of its sovereignty, territorial integrity and security interests of the state, consider it the brotherly debt and stay committed to performance of the interstate treaty between DPRK and Russia," the news agency said.

Since the beginning of the Russian war in Ukraine, North Korea has extended support to Moscow. Kim vowed continued support in recent talks with Putin, telling him he would do “everything I can to assist".

The Russian President expressed gratitude to him for North Korea’s military support, while also acknowledging the role played by their troops in assisting Russian forces in pushing back Ukrainian incursion into the Kursk border region.

Putin also extended an invitation to Kim to visit Moscow during their Beijing meeting.

Their conversation lasted two-and-a-half hours at the Diaoyutai State Guest House in the capital city.

Before departing, Kim told Putin through an interpreter, “See you soon." Putin responded, “We are waiting for you, come visit us."

Kim participated in a multilateral event for the first time during his 14-year rule, marking a key diplomatic moment for the North Korean leader. It was the first spectacle of Kim, Putin, and Xi Jinping presenting a united front amid global tensions.
