Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Friday took a dig at Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir over his remark comparing India’s economy to a “shining Mercedes" and Pakistan’s to a “dump truck full of gravel".
Singh pointed out that Munir’s statement, though mocked widely, revealed a deeper truth about the difference in progress between the two nations.
Speaking at a event, the Defence Minister said, “I consider this statement of Asim Munir as a confession. I do not consider his statement as mere troll material."
He added that if two countries got independence at the same time, and one is now seen as a Ferrari or Mercedes while the other is still a dump truck, it shows the failure of that country’s policies and leadership.
“Everyone said that if two countries got independence at the same time and one country built a Ferrari-like economy through hard work, right policies and foresight and the other is still in a dumper state, then it is their own failure," Singh said.
Referring to the international trolling that Munir faced, Singh remarked that such comments should not be ignored or dismissed lightly.
“If we do not pay attention to the historical indication behind this serious warning, then it can become a matter of concern for us. And yes, if we pay attention to this and prepare for it, then India is capable of giving a befitting reply to such warnings," he added.
Pakistan’s Army Chief Munir had said earlier this month, “India is shining Mercedes coming on a highway like Ferrari, but we are a dump truck full of gravel. If the truck hits the car, who is going to be the loser?"
His remark drew widespread criticism and trolling, both in India and within Pakistan. Many on social media mocked the analogy, questioning why the Pakistani Army Chief would compare his own country to a dump truck.
The comment came in the backdrop of growing tensions between the two countries. On May 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, targeting terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir after a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. Over 100 terrorists were neutralised in the strikes, and cross-border firing continued for four days.
