Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday was conferred with the Order of Oman, the Sultanate’s uniquely distinguished civilian honour, by Sultan Haitham bin Tarik in recognition of his role in strengthening India–Oman relations.

The award places him alongside past recipients such as Queen Elizabeth II, Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, Emperor Akihito of Japan, Nelson Mandela and King Abdullah of Jordan.

Modi received the award during his two-day visit to Muscat, the final stop in his three-nation tour following Jordan and Ethiopia.

The honour adds to PM Modi’s growing list of over 29 top civilian awards from foreign nations, including Ethiopia’s Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia and Kuwait’s Order of Mubarak Al-Kabeer.

His visit coincides with the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties between India and Oman, with both countries focusing on expanding cooperation across trade, investment, energy, defence and cultural exchanges.

Modi arrived in Muscat on Wednesday to a warm reception that included a ceremonial guard of honour.

Prime Minister Modi’s honour in Oman comes a day after Ethiopia awarded him its highest civilian distinction, the Great Honour Nishan of Ethiopia, in Addis Ababa.

The award was presented in recognition of his role in advancing India–Ethiopia relations and deepening cooperation in agriculture, education, technology and capacity building. With this, PM Modi added yet another major international accolade to his growing list of global honours.
