Apple and the European Union (EU) have been at loggerheads for a few years now. The company was forced to adopt USB C for iPhones and other devices by the regulators. And the new tech rules in the region have even made iOS work differently compared to other countries. And Apple is once again highlighting the problems that can arise because of making iOS interoperable, which means it has less control over the platform and its hardware.

The company has prided itself on the privacy standards of its ecosystem, and most of that is because of the famed walled garden. But opening up iOS to third-party access, and the ability to offer apps through other websites on iPhone has Apple worried and rightly so.

The EU Tech Battle For Apple

The new rules by the EU regulators claim users get more options and less restrictions from tech giants like Apple. But the ability to sideload apps on iPhone, which is equally concerning for Google on Android phones these days, means Apple users risk major hacking and malware threats.

Surely the regulators cannot turn a blind eye to the obvious hazards of these changes, unless they manage to tighten the ship for third-party developers and apps on the platform.

Apple often cites limiting innovation, risking consumer privacy as the main reasons to object to the stringent EU tech rules, but eventually the company has to comply or at least find a middle ground to ensure the users do not suffer. The EU rules have already forced Apple to stop selling the iPhone 14 models in the region, because they do not have USB C for charging.

The popularity of iOS, iPadOS and probably even macOS makes it a vulnerable target for the regulators, and the company’s constant warning about user privacy will surely get people worried for their safety, something that they are happy to pay a premium for when they buy the Apple devices.
