US Vice President JD Vance, and Arab and Muslim nations on Thursday condemned Israeli bills calling for the annexation of the occupied West Bank.
According to a joint statement reported by the official Saudi Press Agency (SPA), Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Indonesia, Pakistan, Turkey, Djibouti, Oman, The Gambia, Palestine, Qatar, Kuwait, Libya, Malaysia, Egypt, Nigeria, the Arab League, and the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation strongly condemn the Israeli Knesset’s adoption of these draft laws."
On Wednesday, the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) had voted to consider two bills that would lead to annexing parts of the West Bank. The bill was sponsored by the parliamentary hard-liners, with only one member of Netanyahu’s Likud Party joining them, Associated Press reported.
According to Al Arabiya, the countries denounced the move as “a blatant violation of international law."
As per the US officials, the proposed bills risk undermining efforts to strengthen the ceasefire deal, following two years of war between Israel and Hamas.
US Vice President JD Vance criticised Israel’s Parliament vote on West Bank annexation, saying it amounted to an “insult," Associated Press reported.
He said that if the Knesset vote was a “political stunt, then it is a very stupid political stunt". “I personally take some insult to it. The policy of the Trump administration is that the West Bank will not be annexed by Israel," he said.
This comes even as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Wednesday that a Foreign Service official would be appointed to work along with senior US military commander in the Middle East, Vice Adm. Brad Cooper.
Israel launched a military campaign in Gaza in response to the October 7, 2023, attack, in which Hamas-led gunmen killed about 1,200 people and took 251 others as hostages.
At least 68,216 have been killed in Israeli attacks in Gaza since then, according to Hamas-run health ministry.
