Top American influencer, comedian and podcaster Joe Rogan has raved about the Kailasa Temple in Maharashtra, saying his “mind was blown" by its symmetry and architecture.
“This blows my mind. It’s so beautiful and so symmetrical. They carved this thing from the top down out of one giant rock!" Rogan said while discussing ancient architectural achievements with a guest. He said that he had watched a YouTube video and images of the Kailasa Temple.
The 8th-century rock-cut monument, carved from top-down from a single rock, is the world’s largest monolithic structure. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) continues to maintain and conserve the site.
While mentioning the temple’s scale, symmetry and the method used to create it about 1400 years ago, Rogan said how he was left amazed by the monument.
Pointing out the precision that was need to construct the temple, Rogan said: “And when you think about the just the sheer effort of making this, and if one person f**ks this up, this whole project’s ruined because you’re not building it. You’re carving it out of the mountain. You can’t recurve, and they did it perfectly."
“My jaw was open. I was like, this is crazy. It’s so detailed. And when you think about the just the sheer effort of making this it’s nuts, man. It’s really truly nuts," he continued.
The rock-cut activity was carried out in three phases from the 6th century to the 12th century. The construction on the Kailasa Temple was likely during 760 CE and continued for approximately 18–20 years.
The Kailasa Temple, also known as Cave 16 of the Ellora Caves complex in Maharashtra, was carved out during the reign of Rashtrakuta king Krishna I, who ruled from 756 to 773 CE.
