Ruby Dhalla, a Canadian politician of Indian origin, is running for the leadership of the Liberal Party and, if successful, could become Canada’s first prime minister who is a woman of colour.
Dhalla says that she will work towards bringing back Canada’s lost stature, and the need of the hour is to work unitedly with the US.
Born in Winnipeg to immigrant parents, Dhalla is a businesswoman, doctor, and three-time member of parliament. Considering she is an immigrant herself, Dhalla highlights the need to distinguish between legal and illegal immigrants.
Dhalla says that she penned a letter to then-Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi at the age of 10 during the Operation Blue Star period, which disturbed her tremendously. Given her Sikh roots, she shared her concerns with Indira Gandhi in the letter.
The Prime Minister responded to Dhalla’s letter and also invited her to India. However, Indira Gandhi’s assassination prevented their meeting.
Dhalla has a strong India connect apart from Indian roots. She visited Gujarat in 2009 when Narendra Modi was the chief minister to address the Pravasi Bharatiya Diwas in the presence of the Dalai Lama.
Dhalla says she was impressed by India’s growth opportunities because of the young population. She also says she has a strong spiritual connection, with puja and temples.
On January 22, Dhalla officially launched her candidacy to succeed Justin Trudeau as the leader of the Liberal Party.
She says she would protect all communities and ensure there’s no vandalism and defacing of temples, following a flurry of such incidents in Canada. Dhalla also shared how she even inaugurated one of the BAPS temples in her country.
