US authorities have identified a suspect in the deadly shooting at Brown University and obtained an arrest warrant following an intensive, week-long search, according to reports.

According to CNN, investigators believe they have determined the identity of the person responsible, citing two law enforcement officials familiar with the investigation.

CBS News independently reported similar findings, describing the development as a significant step forward in the case.

The suspect, whose name has not yet been made public, is accused of opening fire inside a classroom on Saturday before fleeing the scene and disappearing into the surrounding Providence neighborhood.

Despite extensive search efforts, the individual managed to evade capture in the days following the attack.

Police released several low-quality surveillance images during the manhunt, but investigators were unable to obtain a clear view of the shooter’s face.

As recently as Wednesday, Providence Police Chief Oscar Perez acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding the suspect’s whereabouts, saying authorities did not yet know who the individual was or where he might be.

The shooting claimed the lives of two students, Ella Cook, 19, a sophomore from Alabama, and Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov, 18, a freshman of Uzbek American heritage, and left nine others injured.

While Brown University operates more than 1,200 security cameras across its 145-acre campus, officials said none were positioned inside the specific area of the Barus & Holley building where the gunfire erupted.

Investigators are also examining whether the campus shooting may be connected to the killing of MIT professor Nuno Lourerio two days later, sources said.

Brown University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology are located less than 50 miles apart.

In the aftermath of the violence, campus security and local law enforcement came under scrutiny as early efforts to identify and locate the suspect yielded few leads, raising questions about surveillance coverage and emergency response procedures.
