Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney has struck back at US President Donald Trump after the American leader claimed at the World Economic Forum (WEF) in Davos that “Canada lives because of the United States".

Carney, in an X post, asserted Canada’s independence while still underscoring the close bilateral relationship between the two neighbours.

Quoting from Trump’s address at the Davos Summit, Carney wrote on X, “Canada thrives because we are Canadian."

He added, “Canada and the United States have built a remarkable partnership, in the economy, in security, and in rich cultural exchange. But Canada doesn’t ‘live because of the United States! Canada thrives because we are Canadian."
