A recent poll reveals that Canadians overwhelmingly reject separatist movements within their borders. A total of 72 per cent respondents support stricter policies to curb such groups, particularly targeting Khalistani separatists. A majority, 54 per cent, believe their country should not be used as a platform for these movements. This strong stance reflects a broader sentiment among Canadians.

The poll, highlighted in an earlier CNN-News18 report, aligns with findings showing limited support for the Khalistani movement internationally, including in the US, UK, and Germany. The demand for action stems from a series of disturbing incidents between 2021 and 2025, including attacks on Hindu temples and incidents involving Indian consulates.

Among the most concerning events were: multiple burglaries and vandalism at Hindu temples in the Greater Toronto Area in late 2021 and early 2022; the vandalising of the BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir in Windsor with anti-Hindu graffiti in April 2023; and the posting of Khalistani threats against Indian diplomats on two Surrey temples in September 2023. Tensions escalated further with clashes between pro-Khalistani supporters and temple attendees at the Hindu Sabha Mandir in Brampton during a consular event on November 3, 2024. This coincided with another attack on the Laxmi Narayan Mandir in Surrey that same day. Just over a week later, a planned consular event at the Triveni Mandir in Brampton was cancelled due to credible threats of violence from Khalistani groups.

Indian consulates in Toronto and Vancouver also faced heightened threats in 2023 following the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, with posters targeting diplomats linked to groups like Sikhs for Justice (SFJ). In early November 2024, consular camps in Vancouver and Surrey experienced disruptions from anti-India elements.

Sikhs Upset with Khalistani Groups: Sources

The recent unrest has caused significant distress among Indian Sikhs globally. They feel the Khalistan issue is being blown out of proportion and fear their faith is being misrepresented. Many expressed concerns about attending Sikh places of worship, questioning whether they should bow before those promoting violence and terrorism.

Top intelligence sources reveal that Sikh groups are deeply concerned about the damage this radical fringe is inflicting upon their reputation for hospitality and charity. As minorities integrated into societies worldwide, they feel their positive contributions are being overshadowed by the actions of a few. They also lament a lack of true leadership, with those involved in harassment and abuse hijacking their community’s image.

Sources said Sikhs around the world are increasingly being harassed or threatened for criticising the aggressive behaviour of Khalistani activists. A disturbing video circulating on social media shows a Sikh follower expressing fear for his children’s safety at places of worship. Others speak out about Hindus feeling unwelcome in their temples and the shame they feel at the disrespect shown towards their sacred symbols.

The rise of this extremist ideology is creating a climate of fear and distrust, tarnishing the image of Sikhs globally, sources said. Many now feel viewed with suspicion in their host countries, fearing that the continued hostility towards India will have broader consequences, sources added. They watch with sadness the situation unfolding in India, believing the Khalistan issue to be a dangerous distraction from the true essence of their faith.
