Fox News host Will Cain has sparked a major debate over the H-1B visa programme after delivering a fiery on-air critique that quickly went viral among conservative influencers. Cain accused major corporations, especially tech giants, of exploiting the programme to hire cheaper foreign workers at the expense of American labour. His comments come as the Trump Labor Department opens nearly 200 investigations into alleged H-1B abuse.
Cain argued that the programme is widely misrepresented, noting: “That’s a little hard to stomach when we hear we’re not talented or skilled enough, when you consider most are entry-or-junior level." Citing statistics, he added that 70% of H-1B visa holders come from India and another 10–15% from China, while 80% of approvals go to entry or junior-level roles—a trend he says contradicts claims that the US lacks skilled workers for these jobs.

Describing the programme as a corporate advantage, Cain said companies “hire foreign workers cheaper than American workers," effectively sidelining domestic talent. His remarks aligned with comments made by Oculus and Anduril founder Palmer Luckey, who has described the H-1B system as “a programme to replace American workers with slave labour that can’t ever escape."
Conservative backlash has intensified, with Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene pledging legislation to phase out the H-1B programme entirely. Greene accused industries of abusing the visa system to undercut American workers, saying: “Big Tech, AI giants, hospitals, and industries across the board have abused the H-1B system to cut out our own people." She added that she has “full faith in the American people" and is committed to “putting Americans first."
The Trump Factor and H-1B
The debate escalated further after President Donald Trump’s interview with Fox News’ Laura Ingraham on Tuesday. Trump defended the H-1B visa programme, which has long been seen as a pathway for highly skilled foreign workers to fill specialised roles in the US. But his stance triggered strong criticism from conservative commentators who argue the programme depresses American wages and limits opportunities for US workers.
Ingraham challenged Trump directly, saying, “If you want to raise wages for American workers, you can’t flood the country with tens of thousands or hundreds of thousands of foreign workers." Trump’s response—“No, you don’t"—only deepened the divide. Prominent conservative voices, including podcaster Benny Johnson and former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, have since renewed calls to ban the H-1B programme altogether.
With investigations underway and political pressure mounting, the future of the H-1B visa programme has become a central flashpoint in the wider debate over immigration, labour and American competitiveness.
