A Chinese court has executed 11 members of the Ming family criminal gang, who allegedly ran mafia-like scam centres in Myanmar and killed workers who tried to escape.
The Wenzhou Intermediate People’s Court in eastern Zhejiang province carried out the executions. The 11 people were sentenced to death in September after they were found guilty of crimes including homicide, illegal detention, and fraud, Xinhua reported.
According to CNN, the Ming family was one of the so-called four families of northern Myanmar — crime syndicates accused of running hundreds of compounds dealing in internet fraud, prostitution and drug production, and whose members held prominent positions in the local government and militia aligned with Myanmar’s ruling junta.
The Supreme People’s Court, which reviewed and approved the death sentences, stated that the gang operated extensively in Myanmar’s Kokang region, specifically in the Laukkai, Shiyuanzi and Chinshwehaw areas, from 2015.
South China Morning Post quoted the court confirming that the syndicate had established multiple compounds, luring financial backers with promises of armed protection to run telecoms scams and illegal gambling operations involving over 10 billion yuan.
The gang used lethal violence to control their operations, according to the court.
The family, headed by Ming Xuechang, was linked to infamous compound called Crouching Tiger Villa in Kokang, an autonomous region on Myanmar’s border with China. The Beijing authorities were able to crackdown on the compounds in 2023.
According to CCTV, the group had 10,000 people working to conduct scams and other crimes.
Ming Xuechang, who had also served as member of a Myanmar state parliament, later killed himself while in custody.
On Thursday, Ming’s son Ming Guoping, who was a leader in the junta-aligned Kokang Border Guard Force, and his granddaughter Ming Zhenzhen were among those executed, Xinhua reported. They were convicted of intentionally killing, wounding and illegally detaining people in their scam compounds, resulting in the deaths of 14 Chinese citizens and injuries to many more, SCMP reported.
