US President Donald Trump has again warned Canada against moving ahead with a trade agreement with China. He said the United States would take “very substantial" action if Ottawa proceeded with such a deal.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said the US did not want China to “take over Canada".

“We don’t want China to take over Canada. And if they make the deal that [President Xi] is looking to make, China will take over Canada. And the first thing they’re going to do is end ice hockey," Trump said.

US threatens Canada

Trump repeated that the United States would respond strongly if Canada went ahead with the agreement.

“If they do a deal with China, yeah, we’ll do something very substantial," he said, according to Reuters.

Earlier, Trump had threatened to impose 100 per cent tariffs on Canada if it proceeded with the proposed deal with Beijing.

He made the remarks while also signalling a softer stance towards Iran, saying Tehran was “talking to" Washington even as US military deployments in the region continued.

Canada says no deal with China

Earlier in January, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada had “no intention" of going forward with a deal with Beijing as Trump warned of heavy tariffs if Canada “makes a deal with China".

“What we’ve done with China is to rectify some issues that have developed in the last couple of years," Carney told reporters in Ottawa. He referred to trade items such as Chinese-made electric vehicles, agriculture and fish products.

Carney also said Canada respects its commitments under the Canada-US-Mexico Agreement. Under the agreement, any of the three countries must inform the others before pursuing a free trade deal with a non-market country like China.

He said Canada would follow these rules and had no plans to enter into such an agreement with Beijing.
