The Jammu and Kashmir government, led by Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, held a special cabinet meeting in Pahalgam today. This marks the first time during the current government’s tenure that a cabinet meeting is taking place outside the traditional capitals of Srinagar or Jammu. The decision to hold a meeting in Pahalgam comes after the brutal terrorist attack that occurred on April 22, 2025, in the Baisaran Valley when armed terrorists attacked tourists resulting in the deaths of 26 civilians.

Tourism Revival

The choice of Pahalgam as the meeting venue is an effort to show solidarity with the residents of the tourist town, which has seen a drastic decline in tourist footfall following the terror attack. While the meeting’s specific agenda remains undisclosed, officials emphasize its primary significance lies in its symbolic communication to anti-national and anti-social elements that violence has no place in Jammu and Kashmir, news agency PTI reported.

Dual Approach To Boost Tourism

The decision for this special cabinet meeting comes just two days after Omar Abdullah proposed a dual strategy to revive Jammu and Kashmir’s struggling tourism sector. At the Governing Council meeting of the NITI Aayog, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he urged the Centre to mandate Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) to hold their meetings in Kashmir and to convene parliamentary committee meetings within the region.

Omar Abdullah said that these concerted government efforts will significantly ease public anxieties, foster a renewed sense of security and trust, and ultimately pave the way for the resurgence of tourism in the Kashmir Valley. This revival is crucial for bringing much-needed economic relief and a return to normalcy.

Unwavering Commitment To Peace

During a special day-long assembly session in Jammu on April 28, the government unanimously passed a resolution against the Pahalgam attack, vowing to resolutely defeat any attempts to disrupt communal harmony and hinder progress. In an emotional 26-minute speech during that session, Omar Abdullah underscored his commitment to principled governance, stating he would not exploit the terror attack as an opportunity to press for the restoration of statehood to Jammu and Kashmir, asserting his disdain for “cheap politics."

The picturesque setting of the Pahalgam Golf Course, surrounded by stunning natural beauty, serves as a backdrop to the government’s broader strategy to revive tourism.

Farooq Abdullah told CNN News18, “The while cabinet is coming here to meet everyone. This is a message to the country and the world that we aren’t frightened. We have to move forward. If you give in, you lose the battle against terrorism."
