Tamil Nadu BJP State President K. Annamalai on Friday expressed his support for former Indian cricketer Ravichandran Ashwin’s remark that Hindi is not the country’s “national language" and clarified that it serves as a link language instead.

Annamalai, calling Ashwin his “dear friend," agreed with the cricketer’s statement and emphasised that Hindi is a “language of convenience".

“Correct. It is not our national language which Annamalai is also telling you. Not only my dear friend Ashwin has to say that…It is not the national language. It was a link language, it is a language of convenience," the BJP leader told the media.’

Ashwin had recently weighed in on the ongoing debate about Hindi being a national or official language. During a speech at a graduation ceremony in Chennai, Ashwin made it clear that Hindi is an official language, not the national language.
