US President-elect Donald Trump has announced to appoint Florida Senator Marco Rubio as the Secretary of State in his second term. The 53-year-old leader would be the first Latino to serve as America’s top diplomat once the Republican president-elect takes office in January.
The Florida Senator expressed gratitude to Trump for placing trust in him. He also vowed to put the interests of Americans and America above all else during his term as Secretary of State.
“Leading the US Department of State is a tremendous responsibility, and I am honored by the trust President Trump has placed in me. As secretary of state, I will work every day to carry out his foreign policy agenda. Under the leadership of President Trump, we will deliver peace through strength and always put the interests of Americans and America above all else. I look forward to earning the support of my colleagues in the US Senate so the President has his national security and foreign policy team in place when he takes office on January 20," Rubio said.
While announcing Rubio’s appointment for the top post, Trump said that the former would be a be a strong advocate for the US, a true friend to its allies, and a fearless warrior would will never back down to adversaries.
“It is my great honour to announce that Senator Marco Rubio of Florida is hereby nominated to be The United States Secretary of State," Trump said making a formal announcement on Wednesday.
Who is Marco Rubio?
Rubio is a politician-lawyer serving as the senior United States senator from Florida, a seat he has held since 2011. A member of the Republican Party, he served as Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives from 2006 to 2008. Rubio unsuccessfully sought the Republican nomination for President of the United States in 2016, but won presidential primaries in Minnesota, the District of Columbia, and Puerto Rico.
Born on May 28, 1971, Rubio is a Cuban American from Miami, Florida. After serving as a city commissioner for West Miami in the 1990s, he was elected to represent the 111th district in the Florida House of Representatives in 2000. Subsequently, he was elected speaker of the Florida House; he served for two years beginning in November 2006. Upon leaving the Florida legislature in 2008 due to term limits, Rubio taught at Florida University.

Over the last several years he has softened some of his stances to align more closely with Trump’s views. The president-elect accuses past US presidents of leading America into costly and futile wars and has pushed for a more restrained foreign policy.
Rubio is considered to be a friend of India and has been an advocate of the India-US relationship.
Rubio also wrote and passed the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act, which represents the greatest turning point in US-China relations in decades. For these achievements and more, the Center for Effective Lawmaking consistently ranks Rubio among the three most effective senators in Congress.
According to the Trump Transition team, Rubio’s father worked as a banquet bartender, while his mother split time as a stay-at-home mom and hotel maid. From an early age, Rubio learned the importance of faith, family, community, and dignified work to the good life.
