US President Donald Trump on Friday received FIFA’s newly created peace prize, an award designed to recognise “individuals who unite people and bring hope for future generations."

The honour was presented during the official draw ceremony for the 2026 World Cup in Washington, which the United States will co-host with Mexico and Canada.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino handed Trump the award at the inaugural event, calling him a leader “who cares about the people." The certificate praised Trump for actions to “promote peace and unity around the world."

Trump, wearing a gold medal and holding a gold trophy shaped like hands lifting the globe, received a warm introduction from Infantino, who declared, “This is your peace prize."

Reacting to the moment, Trump said the FIFA peace prize was “one of the great honours of my life." He thanked his family, including First Lady Melania Trump, and acknowledged Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, leaders of the other two host nations.

Trump has openly sought the Nobel Peace Prize in the past, and Infantino has previously suggested that Trump deserved it for his role in brokering a ceasefire in Gaza. Trump had been widely viewed as the frontrunner for this new FIFA award, given his close ties to the FIFA president.

FIFA called the prize as one that recognises “exceptional and extraordinary actions for peace" and honours those who “unite people across the world." The introduction of the award marks a departure from FIFA’s usual sports-focused remit but aligns with Infantino’s frequent remarks about football as a global unifier.

The award comes during a week in which Trump’s administration has faced scrutiny over lethal strikes on suspected drug boats in the Caribbean, alongside sharp rhetoric on immigration.

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize went instead to Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who said she partly dedicated her recognition to Trump for what she described as his support for her cause.
