Thousands of people took to the streets of Minneapolis on Saturday night for another round of protests following the fatal shooting of a woman by a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agent earlier this week, as part of a nationwide wave of demonstrations against the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement policies.
The protests followed the killing of 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good, a mother of three who was shot inside her vehicle on Wednesday. Tens of thousands marched through Minneapolis, chanting slogans such as “Abolish ICE" and “No justice, no peace — get ICE off our streets," while similar rallies were held in cities including Austin, Seattle, New York, Los Angeles, Durham and others. Activist group Indivisible said more than 1,000 demonstrations were planned across the US this weekend.
City officials said around 30 people were arrested over the weekend, and one police officer sustained minor injuries after being struck by a chunk of ice. Minneapolis authorities stressed that the “vast majority" of protesters remained peaceful despite the bitter cold. On Friday night, police declared an unlawful assembly after demonstrators gathered outside the Canopy Hotel, where ICE agents were believed to be staying. Police said several hundred people attended and some forced entry through an alley entrance, while others threw ice, snow and rocks at officers and vehicles. No serious injuries were reported, though another hotel in the city suffered window damage and graffiti.
At a news conference, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey praised peaceful demonstrators but warned that anyone damaging property or endangering others would be arrested. Police Chief Brian O’Hara said those detained on Friday night were later released, adding that police were receiving dozens of daily calls from residents frustrated by ICE’s presence in Minnesota.
Tensions escalated further when three Minnesota Democratic lawmakers—Ilhan Omar, Kelly Morrison and Angie Craig attempted to tour an ICE facility in Minneapolis. They said they were initially permitted to enter but were later asked to leave, accusing ICE and the Department of Homeland Security of obstructing congressional oversight. “The public deserves to know what is taking place in ICE facilities," Omar said on X.
Good was shot after ICE agents approached her SUV, which was stopped in the middle of the street. Video footage shows agents ordering her to exit the vehicle and pulling at the driver’s door handle. As the vehicle attempted to move away, an agent at the front fired several shots before the SUV crashed nearby. Good’s wife told local media the couple had gone to the area to support neighbours amid immigration enforcement activity.
The Trump administration has said the ICE agent acted in self-defence, claiming Good tried to run him over. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem repeated that assertion. Mayor Frey, however, rejected the claim as a “false narrative," saying the footage suggested Good was trying to leave the scene rather than attack an officer.
The agent who fired the shots was identified as Jonathan Ross, a veteran ICE officer. The FBI is investigating the incident, while Minnesota officials have announced a separate state inquiry after saying they were excluded from the federal probe, intensifying scrutiny of ICE operations and the administration’s immigration crackdown nationwide.
