An attempted armed robbery on an armoured cash van sparked panic and a firefight on a highway in southern Italy on Monday morning, prompting a swift response from security forces and leading to arrests.

The armoured vehicle, operated by Battistolli (BTV), a private security agency, and was forced to stop after attackers blocked the road by setting a van on fire across the carriageway.

As the situation unfolded, a firefight broke out with the Carabinieri (Italian Military Police). During the exchange, a bullet fired by the attackers struck the windshield of a police service vehicle. No injuries were immediately reported.

Video footage recorded by passing motorists shows at least six masked individuals, some dressed in white overalls and carrying weapons, coordinating the ambush. Investigators said the group used multiple vehicles to block traffic and reportedly detonated the van to immobilise the armoured truck. Despite the dramatic operation, the robbery itself was not completed.

To flee the scene, the suspects allegedly hijacked cars from passing motorists. Authorities also said the gang appeared to be using vehicles equipped with flashing lights, posing as civilian police cars to avoid suspicion.

Less than an hour after the attack, the Carabinieri’s provincial command in Lecce announced the arrest of two suspects. Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend other members of the group and to determine whether the gang is linked to organised crime networks operating in the region.
