Ghislaine Maxwell, the former associate of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, is set to testify before the US Congress on Monday, though she is expected to invoke her right to remain silent.

Maxwell, currently serving a 20-year prison sentence for trafficking underage girls to Epstein, will appear via video-link from prison in a deposition conducted by the House of Representatives’ Oversight Committee. The session will be closed to the public.

While no new prosecutions are anticipated following the recent release of government files on Epstein, the disclosures have implicated a number of political and business figures worldwide, triggering resignations and scandals.

The Republican-led Oversight Committee is investigating Epstein’s connections to influential individuals and how authorities handled information about his crimes. Maxwell’s lawyers requested legal immunity to allow her to testify freely, but Congress refused. Without immunity, she has said she will invoke the Fifth Amendment, which protects against self-incrimination.

“Proceeding under these circumstances would serve no other purpose than pure political theater," her lawyers said.

Epstein, who was convicted in 2008 of soliciting a minor, died in a New York prison in 2019 while awaiting trial on further trafficking charges, in what was ruled a suicide. His ties to the wealthy and powerful have continued to cause global political fallout.

Representative Ro Khanna, a Democrat on the committee, published a letter outlining some of the questions Maxwell is expected to face.

The questions centred on Epstein’s alleged co-conspirators, other men accused of abusing minors on his private island, and whether Maxwell or Epstein ever facilitated access to underage girls for high-profile figures, including US President Donald Trump.

The committee may also question Maxwell about any knowledge of Epstein sharing sensitive information with foreign governments, including Russia and Israel.

Maxwell’s testimony comes as scrutiny grows over the handling of her case, including her transfer last year to a minimum-security prison in Texas following meetings with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, a former lawyer for Trump.

Former US President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton are also expected to be deposed by the committee, and they have called for their hearings to be public to avoid political bias.
