GUJARAT
Gujarat will witness by-polls of two vacant assembly seats – Visavadar and Kadi.
In March this year, the Aam Aadmi Party announced its leader Gopal Italia as the candidate for bypolls to the Visavadar assembly constituency.
While the Visavdar seat is vacant due to the resignation of the then AAP MLA Bhupatbhai Bhayani (who later joined the BJP), the Kadi seat, which is reserved only for Schedule Caste (SC) candidates, is vacant due to the passing away of then BJP MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki.
KERALA
The bypoll in Kerala’s Nilambur was necessitated after the resignation of independent legislator PV Anvar after his major fallout with the CPM and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan in the 2021 assembly elections.
He resigned from the party and later joined the Trinamool Congress.
PUNJAB
Punjab’s Ludiana West seat had fallen vacant after the death of MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, who died of a gunshot injury, with his family members and state party chief saying he was fatally hit by a bullet that got fired accidentally from his pistol when he was cleaning it.
While the Congress and AAP have already announced their candidates for the seat, the BJP is yet to announce its candidate for Ludiana West.
WEST BENGAL
The bypolls to Bengal’s Kaliganj were necessitated after the death of Trinamool MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed in February this year.
A special summary revision of electoral rolls in the Kaliganj assembly constituency had to be carried out with the seat falling vacant. This came after an official pointed out that, as only 1,669 new voters were included in the electoral roll, the number of electors would go down by 7,559 voters.
