Elon Musk recently expressed his concerns about the global population drop, describing it as one of the world’s most urgent issues. Musk shared a tweet on X (previously Twitter) that featured a graph initially uploaded by the Tesla Owners Silicon Valley account which anticipated population changes from 2018 to 2100.

The graph showed the population of significant countries such as Nigeria, the United States, Indonesia, and Pakistan, emphasising the impending demographic transitions.

The Tesla Owners Silicon Valley posted a graph stating, “Population collapse is humanity’s greatest threat… Elon Musk." The post was retweeted by Musk replying, “Yes."

For years, experts have recognised that the world’s population is declining, while there is ongoing discussion regarding how fast this trend will occur and which countries would be most affected.

Notably, population loss is mostly caused by declining fertility rates, immigration, and an ageing population. In many countries, the average number of children per woman falls below 2.1, the level required to maintain a stable population. According to the Office for Statistics, the average number of children per woman in England and Wales will be 1.44 in 2023, the lowest it has ever been.

Global fertility rates have fallen substantially, from an average of 5.3 children per woman in 1963 to less than half that figure now, according to the Daily Express.

A graph published in 2020 shows that, while both India and China had populations of roughly 1.5 billion in 2018, their paths are anticipated to diverge significantly.

By 2100, India’s population is expected to fall to slightly under 1.1 billion, a decrease of almost 400 million. However, China’s population is anticipated to shrink sharply to 731.9 million, a startling 731 million drop. This would make Nigeria, with a predicted population of 790.1 million, the world’s second most populous country by the end of the century.

According to a 2020 analysis from experts at the University of Washington, population decrease, notably in China and India, may proceed faster than previously thought.

Despite fertility rates below replacement levels, the United States is expected to be the fourth-largest country in 2100, with population stability aided by positive net migration. Canada and Australia are also anticipated to sustain semi-stable populations through migration.

Current growth countries like Indonesia and Pakistan are likely to see small population reductions by 2100, while the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Ethiopia are expected to outnumber them around the turn of the century.
