External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said he shared concerns about delay in visa processes with US secretary of state Marco Rubio during his meeting with him on Tuesday. Marco Rubio was appointed the US secretary of state by US President Donald Trump as he made a second return to the White House.

Jaishankar was talking to reporters at the Indian embassy in Washington where he briefed them about his meeting with counterpart Rubio and the Quad foreign ministers’ meeting.

The minister said that the issue of delay in processing of visas was discussed where he shared his concerns with his counterpart. He, however, pointed out that the Trump administration was “keen to have India at the inauguration".

“I flagged some concerns which are very widespread in India about delays in visas and the relationship is not well served if it takes that many days to get a visa. They affect business, tourism and constrain people-to-people relationship, which is the foundation of our relationship," Jaishankar said.

The incoming Trump administration has announced a slew of measures targeting immigration with an aim to curb illegal immigration. Donald Trump revoked birthright citizenship, which is enshrined in the US Constitution and declared a national emergency along the US-Mexico border.

The Trump administration’s actions with respect to immigration has also caused concern among Indian-Americans and the Indian diaspora.

However, Jaishankar said that “there is a lot good" that New Delhi and Washington DC could do together.

“There was an agreement between us that we need to be bolder, bigger and ambitious and that our interactions must be more intensive," Jaishankar said.

The minister said that he also met with US House Speaker Mike Johnson and six cabinet members of the Trump administration.
