Google Chat will offer these features in the coming weeks but it won't be available for those with the personal accounts

Google has rolled out a major update for its messaging platform Google Chat. The platform now gets video messages and automatic transcription for voice messages. The updates are primarily available to users via Gmail.

Chats Get Video Messages: What It Brings

According to the company, the new video messaging feature helps users “save time, convey more information and add tone or emphasis.”

Elaborating on the practical uses of the feature in a blog, Google said that customer support or sales team members can use it to share video updates on new features and or account changes. The company claimed the feature will come in handy for sharing company-wide updates or a proxy for a live meeting that was missed by members.

The feature, like any other chat message, can be used in direct messages (DMs), group DMs and spaces. Further, it can be acted upon by quoting, replying or reacting. Messages sent or received will be saved in the Shared tab's Media section.

How to Use Video Messages In Chats

To record a video message, users will see a record button in the text field, which will open a new window. Users can re-record their videos before sending it to the recipient.

Users can send and receive video messages from the web across all platforms. However, recording and sending video messages on mobile is currently unavailable.

The feature is enabled by default, but the workspace admins can disable it whenever they want. The feature is currently unavailable for Google Chat on ChromeOS, Linux and Firefox.

Voice Message Transcriptions In Chats

Through this new feature, users will now view automated transcriptions of voice messages in Chat on the web and mobile. It can be accessed by selecting the new View Transcript option that appears below the voice message. Alternatively, users can choose to hide transcripts.

Earlier in March this year, Google introduced the new Voice Messages feature and the update from Google ads a View Transcription button.

The company rolled out the feature on October 8 for all Google Workspace customers and Google Workspace Individual subscribers on Android, iOS and web. However, it will not be available for personal accounts.
