The Messages app comes installed on most Android phones in India, and the platform has been riddled with spam issues.
The messages app has a lot of issues detecting spam content
Google has introduced five new security measures aimed at enhancing user safety on Google Messages for Android. While most of these features are not widely available yet, Android Authority reports that some are limited to certain regions, with full rollout expected in the coming months. However, improved detection of package delivery and job-related scams is already being implemented.
New Safety Features on Google Messages
Alerts on potentially dangerous links
When users receive a link from an unknown sender, the Google Messages app will alert them and block messages containing links from suspicious sources. This feature is currently available as part of a pilot program in India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Singapore, with plans for a broader rollout later this year, according to the company.
Warnings about sensitive content
The Sensitive Content Warning feature in Google Messages automatically blurs photos that may contain nudity and presents a “speed bump” notification with options and resources for viewing the content. When this feature is activated, users will receive a warning about the risks associated with sharing potentially nude images whenever they attempt to send or transfer such content through the app.
Improved detection of job scams and package delivery
Google has announced that its Messages app will utilise on-device scam detection technology to identify spam SMS messages. Currently available to beta users, this feature requires users to enable spam protection settings. The app will either notify users of potential fraud or automatically move suspected spam texts to a designated folder.
This feature is particularly useful for avoiding SMS-based scams, such as the recent India Post scam. In this scheme, victims receive messages claiming their packages cannot be delivered due to incorrect addresses, along with a link to update their information, appearing to be from India Post.
Shortly after these messages are sent, scammers call the victims, urging them to click the link and take immediate action. The link leads to a fraudulent website where victims are asked to pay a nominal fee for package redelivery. To complete the payment, users must provide their credit or debit card details and other sensitive information. Those who share this information risk identity theft and unauthorised transactions.
Verification of contact
This feature enhances security by making it harder for attackers to impersonate a user’s contacts. It allows users to verify the public keys of their contacts to ensure they are communicating with the correct person. Set to be available next year for Android 9 and later devices, this feature will support messaging apps such as Google Messages.
Hide international spam messages
Users of Google Messages will be able to hide messages from international senders who are not listed in their address book. This feature will shift scam texts from international numbers to the “Spam & Blocked” section once it is enabled.
