The free UPI payment era is slowly but surely coming to an end, especially if you use the payment mode for bill payments. Google Pay is one of the leading UPI payment apps in the country and this week the platform has confirmed that it will have a convenience charge added to your power, gas or phone recharge payments.
The good news is that the regular UPI payments that you make between two people or a shopkeeper will continue to remain free.
More Charges For Bill Payments
The new changes mean if you make bill payments using debit or credit cards on Google Pay, the final amount will be inclusive of a small convenience fee of up to 1 percent. So, if your power bill for X month is Rs 1,500 you will be charged around 1 percent of that as a convenience fee from here on. These changes are not new and other UPI apps like Paytm and PhonePe also have similar fees for bill payments done via the bank cards on these apps.
In addition to this, Google Pay users in India can also look forward to some new features in the coming months. Google Pay will soon let you make a UPI Circle and help your parents or aged people make UPI payments without creating an account and using the app. You can link the primary UPI account and share it with family members, allowing them to pay digitally with your control and payment settings.
UPI payments have grown exponentially over the last few years making it one of the most popular mode of digital payments in the country. UPI payments will also have the option to auto-fill UPI Lite balances and also increase the maximum limit from Rs 2,000 to Rs 5,000 later this year. WhatsApp UPI will soon offer bill payments in the country as, giving people more options.
