Pixel 9 series is launching in around one month from now and Google is expected to make big changes to the devices and offer AI upgrades.

Google is set to unveil the Pixel 9 series next month. New details about the upcoming Google flagship phone suggest the new Pixel series will finally get a much-needed upgrade. According to a report by Android Authority, Google is planning to use an ultrasonic fingerprint scanner in its upcoming devices.

The fingerprint scanners on the previous Pixel devices weren’t received well. Several users reported issues with the unlock speed and the reliability of the scanning. While subsequent OTA updates and the next generation of Pixel devices somewhat improved the situation, the unlocking remained slow.

The reason behind these issues was the fingerprint scanner used by Google in the previous Pixel phones. Initially, the company used Optical sensors in its devices, whereas its competitors had shifted to Ultrasonic sensors. Optical scanners are often slower, less accurate and more sensitive to moisture or dirt.

Now, as Google plans to shift from Optical sensors to Ultrasonic sensors, it should make unlocking faster and more reliable. The unit being used is the same model as the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra, Qualcomm's 3D Sonic Gen 2 (QFS4008), the report added.

The ultrasonic fingerprint scanner is coming to all the Pixel 9 series devices i.e. Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, and Pixel 9 Pro XL except the Fold, which has its fingerprint scanner in the power button.

Google recently confirmed the launch date of the Pixel 9 devices. The flagship devices will debut on August 13. The company usually unveils its new devices in October every year but this time Google has changed its strategy.

Google reportedly wants to launch the Pixel 9 series before rival Apple introduces its iPhone 16 lineup in September. The Pixel 9 version is expected to have a 6.24-inch display, while the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel XL are expected to come with 6.24-inch and 6.73-inch screens, respectively. Also, all the upcoming models will be equipped with AMOLED displays with 120Hz refresh rate and may include AI capabilities.
