A Gujarati man attempted to cross into the United States with a stolen Pakistani passport, but authorities saw through his deception, and he was deported back to India.

AC Patel from Gujarat became Mohammad Najir Hussain of Pakistan in his bid to enter the US, as per his passport, for which he allegedly relied on human traffickers, according to a report by the Times of India.

It is important to mention that this brazen attempt to cross into the US came at a time when Donald Trump’s administration had intensified its crackdown on illegal Indian immigrants. In the last month, more than 300 illegal immigrants have been deported, including 74 from Gujarat.

Patel was caught at the US Airport and was promptly deported back to India, arriving at the Delhi Airport on February 12. His troubles widened further as he was arrested by Delhi Police soon after arrival.

Authorities were stunned after discovering a Pakistani passport. After interrogation, Patel revealed that he paid an agent in Dubai to forge his Gujarati identity for a Pakistani one, just to secure a spot on a US flight.

His actual passport had expired in 2016 and instead of renewing it, Patel had reportedly relied on human traffickers who provided him fraudulent documents and an illegal journey via Dubai.

“Human smugglers pick passports that are strong for getting a US visa or randomly assign some UAE citizen’s passport to sneak into the US," a source told ToI. Patel is facing multiple charges, including cheating by impersonation and misuse of passport.

In a similar case last month, a Gujarati national was arrested for using fake credentials to obtain Portuguese citizenship, as per a local news outlet. Karan Jayanti Tandel was arrested after authorities at the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) flagged inconsistencies in his visa application.

Karan had allegedly obtained an Indian passport under the false identity of Ramesh Tandel, listing a Mumbai address. It was later revealed later that he had applied for a Portuguese passport citing different details.

The accused admitted to using forged documents, including an Aadhaar card and a driving licence, to obtain an Indian passport before applying for Portuguese citizenship. Authorities suspect that Tandel’s fraudulent activities were aimed at securing dual benefits from both nations.
