Outgoing US President Joe Biden on Sunday (local time) issued a “full and unconditional pardon" to his son Hunter, who faced sentencing on gun crime and tax convictions, stating that he was singled out only because he was his son.
Biden termed the charges against his son politically motivated and said that he believes in the justice system.
“Today, I signed a pardon for my son Hunter," Biden said in a statement.
“For my entire career I have followed a simple principle: just tell the American people the truth. They’ll be fair-minded. Here’s the truth: I believe in the justice system, but as I have wrestled with this, I also believe raw politics has infected this process and it led to a miscarriage of justice – and once I made this decision this weekend, there was no sense in delaying it further," he added.
Hunter Biden was convicted earlier this year on federal gun and tax charges. He was set to appear in Delon, California soon where he potentially would have faced lengthy prison sentences.
