The External Affairs Ministry has been informed about the 36-year-old man who hailed from Hyderabad and got trafficked to Myanmar where he faced physical torture after he refused to get involved in internet fraud.
The man’s family reached out to Union External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and informed him that they had failed to get him released from Thailand where he was arrested.
The 36-year-old man, Shaik Ashraf, was arrested by the Thailand Police soon after he entered the country from Myanmar.
The man’s family members have appealed to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) to intervene in the case and bring him back to India.
Family Informs Ministry About Man’s Ordeal
The man, identified as Shaik Ashraf, was a resident of Afsar Khan Colony in Golconda, Hyderabad.
On August 1, 2023, the man went to Dubai, UAE in search of a job but failed to find any job. During that time, a Chinese travel agency reached out to the man and promised to give him a job in an IT company in Thailand.

On August 29, 2024, the man finally decided to travel from Dubai to Bangkok, Thailand where he met another agent who took him to Mae Sot in Thailand.
On reaching Bangkok, he met another agent who took him to an unknown location towards Myanmar in a boat.
The family informed the ministry that the man, upon reaching the location, was asked to carry out internet-related fraud as part of the work.
“As he refused to do that, he was physically tortured and administered electric shocks," said the family.
As per the family, the company asked the man to pay $5,000 for his release. The family then decided to take the case of Shaik Ashraf to the Indian Embassy in Thailand as well as the Indian Embassy in Cambodia and the Indian Embassy in Myanmar.
Social worker Amjed Ullah Khan said that the family did not receive any help after which the man’s wife took the matter into her own hand.
Ashraf’s wife Jabeen Sultana borrowed Rs 3.5 lakh and gave it to the company for the release of her husband.
However, the man was arrested by the Thailand Police as soon as he entered the country from Myanmar and sent to jail.
“He was released, and after entering Thailand, he was arrested by Thailand police and sent to jail," Khan said.
He said that the MEA has till now just confirmed that the man is in Thailand police’s custody but has not assured the family of any help.
