Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, on Wednesday claimed that he was stopped from speaking in the House. Stating that the Lower House of the Parliament was being run in an “undemocratic manner", the Congress leader said that this is a “new way where in a democracy, the Opposition has no place".
His remarks came after Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla asked him to follow the rules of procedure that members are expected to observe to uphold the dignity of the House.
“You are expected to maintain the high standards of dignity and decorum of the House. I am aware of several instances where the conduct of MPs was not in line with maintaining the high standards of dignity and traditions of the House," Speaker Om Birla said.
“Father, daughter, mother, wife, and husband have been members of this House. Therefore, in this context, I expect the Leader of the Opposition to conduct themselves in accordance with the rules. It is particularly expected of the Leader of the Opposition that they maintain their conduct," he added.
Rahul Gandhi’s ‘I’m Stopped From Speaking’ Charge
Attacking Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi said he was not being allowed to speak in the House and that this was not the correct way to run the proceedings.
“I don’t know what is going on. I requested him to let me speak but he (Speaker) just ran away. This is no way to run the House. Speaker just left and he did not let me speak. He said something unsubstantiated about me, then adjourned the House," Rahul Gandhi was quoted as saying.
“Whenever I stand up, I am stopped from speaking. I did nothing, I was sitting quietly, there is no place for democracy. I wanted to speak on Kumbh Mela. I also wanted to speak on unemployment but I wasn’t allowed," the Leader of Opposition added.
This is not the first time that Rahul Gandhi has made certain remarks. Last week as well, he accused the Lok Sabha speaker of not giving him an opportunity to speak.
