With speculation about the health of jailed Imran Khan refusing to die down, his aide and ex-minister Fawad Chaudhry has offered key insights on what might be behind the rumours and why the Pakistani government was not releasing any photos of the former Prime Minister. In an exclusive interview with India Today, Chaudhry, who served as Information Minister in the Imran Khan government, said the speculation on the PTI chief was part of a broader misinformation crossfire between Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Earlier this week, several social media handles from Afghanistan, including Afghan Times, claimed that Imran was murdered inside Rawalpindi's Adiala Jail. It was alleged that Pakistani army chief Asim Munir hatched the conspiracy.
Chaudhry claimed that it was a "tit-for-tat" response to a Pakistani media report earlier this year alleging Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Haibatullah had been assassinated.
"This rumour mongering was more of a tit-for-tat for news that was published in Pakistan that Mullah Haibatullah of the Afghan Taliban head has been assassinated. So I think the Taliban are just trying to equalise that," the former Pakistani minister said.
