US ambassador Sergio Gor, who is on a visit to India, on Monday announced that India will be invited to join the United States-led strategic initiative, Pax Silica, which will cover critical minerals to advance manufacturing.

What is Pax Silica? Which countries are in it? All you need to know.

What is Pax Silica?

Pax Silica is a US-led strategic initiative to build a secure, prosperous, and innovation-driven silicon supply chain — from critical minerals and energy inputs to advanced manufacturing, semiconductors, AI infrastructure, and logistics.

Rooted in deep cooperation with trusted partners, Pax Silica aims to reduce coercive dependencies, protect the materials and capabilities foundational to artificial intelligence, and ensure aligned nations can develop and deploy transformative technologies at scale.

Pax Silica is a positive-sum partnership. It is not about isolating others, but about coordinating with partners who want to remain competitive and prosperous.

Which countries are in it?

When Pax Silica was created, India was not included among the founding members.

The inaugural Pax Silica Summit convened stakeholders from: Japan, Republic of Korea, Singapore, the Netherlands, The United Kingdom, Israel, United Arab Emirates, and Australia, alongside guest contributions from Taiwan, the European Union, Canada, and the OECD

Together, these partners are home to the most important companies and investors powering the global AI supply chain.

What has changed?

Gor said, “As the world adopts new technology, it is essential that India and the United States work hand in hand from the very start of this initiative…You and I have an incredible once in a lifetime opportunity to redefine diplomacy. What it can accomplish could be the most consequential global partnership of this century…"

“No partner is more essential than India. In the months and years ahead, it is my goal as ambassador to pursue a very ambitious agenda. We will do this as true strategic partners, each bringing strength, respect, and leadership to the table," said Gor.

He further said, “… I come to this remarkable nation with profound respect and a clear mission: to take the partnership between our two nations to the next level. This is the intersection between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy… During my last dinner with him, President Trump recounted his last visit to India and also his great friendship with the great Prime Minister of India. I hope the President will be visiting us soon, hopefully in the next year or two… President Trump has a habit of calling at 2 in the morning, and with the time difference in New Delhi, it might work out pretty well."

Why Pax Silica?

New Economic Security Paradigm: Across the United States and its partners, a clear consensus has emerged: secure supply chains, trusted technology, and strategic infrastructure are indispensable to national power and economic growth.

The initiative responds to:

Growing demand from partners to deepen economic and technology cooperation with the United States.

The understanding that AI represents a transformative force for our long-term prosperity.

Recognition that trustworthy systems are essential for safeguarding our mutual security and prosperity.

Increasing risks from coercive dependencies.

The importance of fair market practices and policy coordination to protect sensitive technologies and critical infrastructure.
