Apple is ready to offer the new iOS 18.2 update in the next few weeks and iPhone users can expect more features.
The new default apps feature will be coming in the Settings
iPhone users will get the option to change their default apps, something that Android has offered for many years. The ability to have a new default app for mail, contacts, calls and other categories is coming your way with the iOS 18.2 update in December. The new iOS 18 update promises a host of AI features for select iPhone users but there are other functional upgrades coming to a wider range of models in a few week’s time.
iOS 18.2 Default Apps For iPhone: What It Offers
Default apps, as the name suggests, will let you choose another app to be the default option for mails, contacts, and even browsers. Apple has limited this option to its own apps for many years, but the company is finally opening the window for third-party apps, who can become the de-facto mail, contacts or browser on your iPhone.
What this means is that once you get the iOS 18.2 update, the iPhones will get a new option in the Settings, from where you can change the default apps for mail to Gmail, Chrome for a browser instead of Safari and others. The new beta version also shows you other options like keyboard, password and codes and call filtering, which is likely to be like a spam splitter.
As we said earlier, Android users have got this feature for years and Apple is probably being forced to loosen its ecosystem strings owing to regulatory pressure from all corners. Don’t forget without the EU pressure, the iPhone 15 series would have never got USB C for charging, which is now becoming a go-to choice for all Apple devices.
iOS 18.2 Update Release Date And More
In addition to the default apps, iOS 18.2 also promises an easier way to know the battery charging status for your iPhone. The feature is being codenamed Battery Intelligence for now, and we might see its full application roll out with the public version in the coming months.
The iOS 18.2 beta version has already given us a teaser of the new features to come, and reports this week say that Apple could be looking at a release date of around December 9 for the new iOS 18 version. Going by the recent update rollouts and their estimates, it is quite possible that Apple’s official release date will match out.
