Spam calls are a concern for millions of mobile users in the country and the efforts to bring them down are moving slowly.
Spam calls are coming down for some people but other issues are there
Spam calls have become a constant issue for Indian mobile users and the authorities are slowly coming to realise its annoyance. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India or TRAI has set up strict rules to block these spam calls and it seems people are reaping its benefits over the last few months.
The blacklisting of around 50 calling entries has played a big role in this change but the issue still persists and now people are worried about these calls being routed through robots. All these details come via a detailed survey report by Local Circles recently, which involves responses from over 14,000 mobile subscribers in the country.
Spam Calls Persist And Getting Worse?
The report highlights the concerns of mobile subscribers, with some of them claiming the number of spam calls they get have reduced, while some even point out the increase in these calls. More worryingly, people have also seen the automated/robo calls increase in the last one month which is surely going to bring other issues into the picture for the authorities.
In total, only 9 percent subscribers said the pesky calls have come down which is a start but shows how much the situation has to change in the coming months. However, 43 percent and 21 percent of the people surveyed said the spam calls have not reduced and only increased further with the prominence of auto calls causing further headache.
Early Days
TRAI has acted strongly on the culprits for the spam call menace by disconnecting over 2.75 lakh numbers and blocking around 50 entities who have indulged in these practices. But the issue is clearly widespread and needs a major overhaul in the systems in a unified manner to make the best of these solutions.
We have seen reports about a Truecaller-like ID tech at a national scale but deploying that solution will be a challenge when you have over 600 million phone users across the country which is never going to be a cake walk.
