Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Monday said the US does not believe the Israeli strike targeting a military official in Gaza during the weekend was not a violation of the ceasefire deal.

“Israel didn’t surrender its right to self-defense. Obviously, the ceasefire is based on obligations on both sides. By the way, we’d also like to see Hamas speed up the return of hostage bodies," Rubio said on Air Force One with President Trump en route to Asia.

He further said: “We still have 13 hostages, two Americans included, but we don’t view that as a violation of the ceasefire."

He added, “They have the right. There’s an imminent threat to Israel, and all the mediators agree with that."

On Saturday, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said it carried out a drone strike in Gaza’s Nuseirat, targeting an “operative" from the Palestinian Islamic Jihad terror group who was planning an imminent attack against troops.

Washington Times quoted the IDF as saying that it has also conducted airstrikes in Gaza on Monday morning against a group of Palestinian terror operatives who crossed the yellow line delineating the military’s pullback in the Gaza Strip.

Top White House officials, including Vice President JD Vance, visited Israel last week following the Hamas attack on IDF troops.

The ceasefire was brokered through a lattice of American, Egyptian, and Qatari diplomacy. The agreement, stitched together under intense American pressure, halted large-scale Israeli offensives and opened Gaza’s borders to a trickle of humanitarian relief. In return, Hamas pledged a halt to attacks and the gradual release of hostages—living and dead.

Teams from Egypt and the Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have joined the search for bodies of deceased hostages taken during the October 7, 2023, attacks.

BBC quoted the Israeli government as saying that the teams have been permitted to search beyond the so-called “yellow line" in the area controlled by Israeli forces in Gaza.

The “yellow line" is the boundary along the north, south and east of Gaza that Israel withdrew to, as part of the first stage of the ceasefire deal.

Till now, Hamas has transferred 15 out of 28 deceased hostages under the first phase of a US-brokered ceasefire deal, which requires it to transfer all hostage bodies.
