A 32-year-old man was arrested for allegedly raping a 20-year-old Indian-origin woman in a racially aggravated attack in Walsall, West Midlands.

In a big development, a 32-year-old man was arrested on Monday for allegedly raping a 20-year-old Indian-origin woman in a racially aggravated attack in UK’s Walsall, West Midlands Police said.

The suspect was detained around 7 am on Monday (local time) in Perry Barr, Walsall, The Sun reported, citing West Midlands Police.

The accused is currently in custody and being questioned by the cops.

The woman, in her 20s, was allegedly sexually assaulted in the West Midlands on Saturday night in what police have described as a “racially aggravated" attack.

Officers were called to the Park Hall area of Walsall shortly after receiving reports of a woman in distress on the street.

Upon reaching the scene, police found that the woman had been attacked at a nearby property by a man she did not know. The incident has left the community shaken and sparked renewed concerns over the safety of women in the region.

According to investigators, the suspect was described as white, in his 30s, with short hair and wearing dark clothing. Earlier on Sunday, the West Midlands Police also released CCTV footage of the accused and urged the public to come forward with any information that could help identify him.

The survivor, who is Punjabi according to the Sikh Federation, was called a p**b by the attacker, the UK’s Daily Mail reported.

Dabinderjit Singh, an executive for the Sikh Federation (UK) told the UK daily, “We can now confirm from local sources the young woman that was subject to a racially aggravated rape in Walsall is a Punjabi woman."

“A neighbour also heard her screams during the vicious attack," Dabinderjit was quoted as saying by the London-based tabloid.

Detective Superintendent Ronan Tyrer of West Midlands Police called the incident “an absolutely appalling attack on a young woman," and assured that investigators are doing everything possible to apprehend the perpetrator.

“We have teams of officers recovering evidence and building a profile of the attacker so that he can be brought into custody as soon as possible. While we are following multiple lines of enquiry right now, it’s vital that we get to hear from anyone who saw a man acting suspiciously in the area at the time," Tyrer said.
